The company GEDIS mbH & Co. KG, also known as “GEDIS CONTROL SYSTEMS”, was founded in May 1991 and has been involved in the development, manufacture, delivery and maintenance of control systems for building material mixing plants (with a focus on concrete production) for more than 25 years. High-quality, reliable control systems, service and customer satisfaction for our customers at home and abroad as well as a good working atmosphere are the focus and the basis for our success to date. Our company has a broad portfolio and immense experience in the development, design and manufacture of automation systems for mixing technology.

Brothers Gerhard and Wolfgang Schmack founded the company GEDIS mbH & Co. KG with the vision of raising the automation of building material mixing plants to a new level of technology and support. The development of hardware and software based on the microprocessor technology available at the time formed the core of their activities. By manufacturing its own self-sufficient programmable logic controller (PLC) and a dosing computer specially developed for the application area of building material mixing technology, the first delivery of the EPROM system: GDS-8 Plus with an operator terminal for process visualization was already possible in August 1991.

The creation of an in-house software department laid the foundation for the development of the IBS33 (DOS) system, based for the first time on standardized industrial PC technology. Customer requirements in the area of interfaces to billing, laboratory and scheduling systems as well as precise documentation and statistical evaluation of production data could thus be fully implemented. The result was a complete range of solutions for electronic process control tasks in the building materials industry. A large and loyal customer base quickly developed within Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The high demand for mixing plants in the new federal states, due to the reunification of Germany, made it possible to quickly establish the company in the market.

While the company continued to develop and establish itself on the German and Austrian markets, the Schmack brothers examined the opportunities for their start-up on other target markets within Europe and, following a market analysis, began delivering and installing control systems in Poland. One milestone was the establishment of a Polish representative office in Katowice with the aim of being able to adapt the products and system solutions to market requirements and customer needs. This affected both the service and the software itself. From then on, the control system was also available in English and Polish.

Between 1999 and 2005, the company marked major milestones in its growth and technological development, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2001 and significantly advancing concrete production through industry-specific solutions. It expanded geographically with a Northern Germany branch in 2003, early exports to Northern and Western Europe, and the installation of a concrete mixing plant in Lithuania. Continuous enhancement of the IBS33W control system enabled its use across ready-mixed and precast concrete plants, covering the full range of concrete mixing technologies, while international expansion progressed through participation in the BIG5 Exhibition in Dubai and subsequent deliveries to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and later Ukraine.

Following the 2008 financial crisis, low investment levels in Europe’s building materials industry led GEDIS to focus between 2009 and 2012 on modernizing and partially expanding existing mixing plant control systems, reflecting its commitment to tailored technical development, expertise, and close customer collaboration. From 2011 onward, GEDIS integrated safety technology in compliance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, introducing a certified, high-performance safety system applicable to both retrofitted and new plants. Further market expansion was achieved from 2013 through close cooperation with a mobile mixing plant manufacturer, opening opportunities in Russia, Belgium, and England.

At the bauma 2016 trade fair in Munich, GEDIS presented several new products and innovations, including a new database system, a passively cooled IPC (TANK), an Industry 4.0 web interface, a direct SAP–GEDIS interface, and electronic signature solutions. The company also delivered advanced process control technology for large precast plants, featuring mixer consistency controls, bucket conveyor management, touchscreen-based concrete request stations, and material feeding systems for aggregates and binders. In addition, GEDIS supplied IBS33W control technology for new plants from nearly all major manufacturers in the German market, modernized existing plants in Romania, and strengthened its future leadership with the entry of Fabian Schmack into the family business on October 1, 2018.
